Ghana Surgical and Medical Mission to Tumu District Hospital
From November 17th to 22nd, 2013, our volunteer Virtue Foundation medical team traveled to Tumu, Northern Ghana as part of Virtue Foundation’s Model Institute for Innovation and Philanthropy, Ghana Healthcare Initiative. All specializing in women’s health and reproductive medicine, the Virtue Foundation Medical Team worked together for three days to screen hundreds of female patients. They performed several successful surgeries, such as ovarian cystectomies, abscess reductions, hysterectomies, and even aided in delivering a healthy baby boy. The Virtue Foundation medical team donated more than 15,000USD worth of equipment to Tumu District Hospital, including a fully functional ultrasound, which will be used to screen patients in the future.
In addition to the physical resources that were left behind, the doctors lectured on a number of topics, while also training local staff on donated equipment and surgical techniques.
The team hopes to return within the year to grow the Virtue Foundation–Tumu District Hospital partnership.
