Since 2009, Virtue Foundation has been traveling to the East Sissala District, Ghana to carry out medical and surgical interventions as part the Foundation’s Ghana Surgical and Medical Mission.

This year, Virtue Foundation returned to Ghana for yet another Medical Mission to Tumu, East Sissala District from November 21-27th, 2015. The team had a successful trip, carrying out over 120 patient screenings at Tumu District Hospital.

After several days of clinical work in Tumu, a needs assessment was carried out in other health facilities in the East Sissala District to identify areas of future Virtue Foundation work. One such visit was to Wellembelle Health Center, a small community health center that is seriously lacking in the healthcare infrastructure needed to adequately serve a large and impoverished community.

Since this initial needs assessment of Wellembelle Health Center, Virtue Foundation has acted to address the many gaps that were identified, mainly in terms of equipment. The Foundation teamed with the Hospital of Wolfsberg, Austria, in order to ship a cargo container of medical equipment and supplies to help outfit Wellembelle Health Center with the items the Center lacks. The Hospital of Wolfsberg generously donated a large quantity of equipment and supplies, which was packed and shipped via ocean freight and brought to Wellembelle Health Center. With collaboration from the local health ministries, the Wellembelle Health Center is currently being restructured and undergoing renovation in order to accommodate the equipment, to become a fully functioning health center servicing the East Sissala communities.
